Software Availability & Quality
|
I get to use wide variety of software in my daily function. Some of these packages of software
are very useful in helping me complete some very basic functions. Others are hugely complicated
and require a certain period of tinkering before they provide the necessary productivity. I've been amazed at the number of valuable applications that are available for free, nearly free (shareware), and for a reasonable purchase. The value of these packages to me for productivity gains is not always reflected in the aquisition price. Some of the most expensive packages are so bloated that they are not immediately useful. While the shareware packages are small, quick to install and provide productivity gains quickly.

Quality of the programming is also not always reflected in the aquisition cost. I've found some very nasty bugs that lead a person nowhere among the most pricey software packages. Unfortunately, the effort to debug them and apply the necessary remedy is not easy also. The shareware or freeware types are not free from annoying bugs either. However, there are a certain packages out there that are the reflection of the original author(s) and while almost free, are very solid and free of bugs. Additionally, the author(s), typically provide direct links to them to settle many bugs. I've yet to find that type of support the the major packages. So ultimately, the value, quality, productivity gains, and ergonomics of a software package are a reflection of the original author(s) and their pride.
